About Debbie cooper

We are proud to call Debbie Cooper a friend & excited to have her teach our ranch horse community!

Debbie  Cooper, an Arizona Native, began her journey with horses at the age of 11 when she became involved with the Ari zona Quarter Horse Association (AzQHA). Under the guidance of Hall of Fame trainer Jim Paul, Debbie spent her youth years developing a deep understanding and connection with horses—a foundation she credits to his mentorship.

As a youth rider, Debbie achieved tremendous success, riding her two horses El Companero and May Dodger. She and her Gelding, El Companero, were named AQHA Youth World Champions in Western Riding and earned the distinction of being the first duo to win the AQHA Youth Honor Roll title in Working Cow Horse. May Dodger, a Palomino mare, and Debbie were among the early riders to earn the prestigious AQHA Youth Champion title. In addition to numerous year-end award buckles and saddles from AzQHA, her early career was marked by groundbreaking achievements.

Debbie is a pioneer in many respects. She competed in the inaugural AQHA Youth and Open World Shows and later became the first female NRHA judge and AQHA female judge from Arizona. Her leadership extended to founding the original Arizona Reined Cowhorse Association with a small group of peers, where she served as a board member for several years. Debbie also played an active r ole on the AzQHA Board and the AQHA Professional Horsemen’s Committee, ultimately being recognized as the 2020 AQHA Professional Horsewoman.

With over 30 years as an AQHA judge, Debbie has held judging cards with the NRHA and NRCHA as well. Her career has taken her across the globe to judge major events, including the AQHA Open, Select, Youth, and Ranch Versatility World Championship Shows, the European Championships, the NRHA Reining Futurity, and the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. Her influence in the equestrian world has transcended borders, with judging assignments in six European countries.

As a competitor, Debbie’s accolades include being an AQHA World Champion and Congress Champion. She has trained and coached numerous Youth and Amateur World Champions across multiple disciplines. Her commitment to excellence has also extended to her work as a clinician and coach, conducting clinics in five countries outside the United States and coaching Youth World Cup Teams for England, Italy, and Switzerland.

Despite her professional success, Debbie considers her greatest accomplishments to be her family and the lifelong friendships she has built along the way. For her, the Quarter Horse has not only been a career but a shared passion that has brought incredible people into her life. She is deeply grateful for the opportunities, connections, and memories that this journey has provided.

Debbie Cooper’s life and career are a testament to dedication, pioneering spirit, and a profound love for the American Quarter Horse.
